IBCLC General Education Requirements

It has been awhile since I have done a post on becoming a Lactation Consultant. Currently I am working on filling in the gaps in my general education requirements. I have a bachelors degree, but there are a few courses that I managed to skip over during that process. Starting in 2012, everyone(with the exception of health professionals) will need the following general education requirements to sit for the IBCLC exam:

College credit courses:

  • Biology
  • Human Anatomy
  • Human Physiology
  • Infant and Child Growth and Development
  • Nutrition
  • Psychology/Counseling/Communication Skills
  • Introduction to Research
  • Sociology/Cultural Sensitivity/Cultural Anthropology

Continuing Education:

  • Basic Life Support(CPR)
  • Medical Documentation
  • Medical Terminology
  • Occupational Safety and Security for Health Professionals
  • Professional Ethics for Health Professionals
  • Universal Safety Precautions and Infection Control

The continuing education courses do not need to be for-credit-classes. IBLCE does not specify the length that these courses must be. The college credit classes must be a full term or semester(depending on the institution).

I plan to take my college courses at the local community college. I am guessing I will fill in the gaps for the continuing education courses through online programs.
